Guilford’s Rich History
Guilford boasts a fascinating past that shaped its unique character. During the first census in 1791, it claimed more residents than any other Vermont town, with a population of 2,432. Originally chartered in 1754, Guilford’s history includes the “Guilford War” of 1783, when martial law was enforced to settle disputes between Yorkers and Vermonters during the Revolutionary War era.
Until the early 1960s, thirteen one-room schoolhouses were scattered throughout the town, a testament to its once-significant population and commitment to education. Today, these historical roots are visible in the town’s well-preserved architecture and community pride.
